SnargeBarger 8

The SnargeBarger 8 barges 8-bit samples into your Amiga's parallel port! It records in mono at over 50kHz if you fancy, right into Protracker and other programs. You can make some right banging choons with this! Fookin crucial.

There is now the Open Amiga Sampler project which is similar. But with the self-harming lockdown-induced supply chain crisis the world is going through, the AD7819 chip used here is easier to find (sometimes!) This design is a bit simpler too! It is designed to protect your Amiga. The Vref supply is also stabilised for the best sound! Crispy clean cream.

Tip: Only plug it into the Amiga with the power off. Unplug the audio cable before plugging/unplugging the sampler from the Amiga! You can murder an Amiga by plugging/unplugging any sampler with its audio cable still attached. You go away for a very long time if you do that. Avoid feeling the sampler's pins to prevent static damage. You don't work for the BBC, you won't get away with it!!

No warranty! If you blow up your Amiga it's your own bloody fault!!

Optional parts:

All parts are through-hole, the way they bloody well should be!!

Board Layout

You can build it on stripboard like the good old days. Pop down to Tandy to pick up the bits you need. No Youtubers supporting CCBs (Communist Circuit Boards). You should put it in a nice square box, crafted from wood in the morning. If you're crazy like me you can cram it into a D-sub headshell (you'll need to modify the layout for that).

Setting Up

  1. Turn VR1 25 turns anti-clockwise to make sure it's at the end of its travel.
  2. Turn VR1 12.5 turns clockwise to centre it.
  3. Plug it into the Amiga and start up AMOS BASIC. Type in this program:
    • 10 POKE $BFE301,0
    • 20 PRINT PEEK($BFE101)
    • 30 GOTO 20
  4. Run the program, then adjust VR1 until the program prints exactly 128. Now you can be sure there's no clicky DC offset in your samples like you get with shitty samplers.
  5. Now it's ready to make the choons on shrooms!
